 For the past 16 years, I’ve been learning to eat a healthy, well-balanced vegan diet. No dairy, no meat, no other animal products.  Too many losses you think?  To the contrary.  I’ve gained so much (and I’m not talking about dreaded inches or pounds).  I mean lots of fresh produce, tasty fruits, satisfying grains, nourishing nuts and nut butters, homemade seitan, seasoned tofu, healthy sea vegetables, etc. 

Despite the fact that these dietary choices set me apart from the mainstream of human eating, I don’t really consider myself a food adventurer.   I respectfully give that designation to my friend Sean.   He always seems to have a new recipe website to consult, a new product to try, or a new super food to investigate and integrate into his family’s meals.  Plus over the years that I’ve known him he’s become an excellent cook/food preparer.   

I do, however, identify with and believe strongly in the concept of evolutionary diet – the idea that we can grow in our awareness and consumption of what is healthy for ourselves and our planet.  This is what Site 6/Rite 6 in the OMS is all about.

Like all the Sites in the OMS, Site 6 represents one of the Rites of Passage on the Path of Fusing the Soul with the personality.  Rite 6 is all about Evolutionary Diet.   The Rite 6 Teaching says:  The purificatory fires burn dim and low when animals are sacrificed to Humanity.  Therefore refrain from taking animal lives and nourish the body with the produce of the vegetable kingdom.  This Rite speaks directly about adopting a vegan diet.  The reason for this is that the fiery energy and inspirations of the Soul need a light and responsive vessel to work through.  Eating animals and animal products weighs our bodies down with heavy oils and fats.  It stimulates our animal or instinctive nature, clouds our thinking, and contributes to health problems, including obesity. An abundant vegan diet on the other hand nourishes, purifies, energizes, and fortifies.  

That being said, on a broader level, Rite 6 isn’t just about adopting a vegan diet (although that is the ultimate evolutionary objective of this Rite).  It’s about being aware of our next step – the next dietary change we are willing to make to improve the health of ourselves, our families and our planet, no matter what our diet is like right now. 

This impulse, this directive to make evolutionary dietary choices is finding resonance with many, many people throughout the United States and the world.  It’s like a rising wave.  Just look at the popularity of television shows like Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, Lifetime’s DietTribe, and NBC’s Biggest Loser, the emergence of Movies like Super Size Me, Food, Inc and Fresh – the Movie, and the presence of Books like Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food.  To me this rise of questioning and curiosity is very exciting, because changing the way we eat is essential to improving our collective human health, the foundations of our food economy, and the health of the planet. 

When I visit Site Six and meditate on my next dietary step, I always get the impression to eat more raw foods, and now that summer is here I’ve made a commitment to myself to do just that and to try out a new raw food recipe every week.  This latter commitment is what motivated me to rescue the bananas from the fridge and to make the Cinnamon Banana Buttermylk. 

In this season of farmers’ markets, abundant produce, tainted meats and re-called sugar cereals, I invite you to join the evolutionary diet wave.  Take a minute to consider the dietary changes you are inspired and committed to bring forth in your life to improve your vitality, the well-being of your family, and the health of Earth.  You’ll be glad you did.
